We get these spam emails every day. I get a ton of them and filter out most of them. They basically promise to make you rich for a small amount of money.
I heard an interesting take on this the other day.
I’ve always wondered who would fall for this and why do they send such obviously fake emails. It turns out that the scammers intentionally do a poor job creating these scams to filter out smart people. They only want suckers to reply. They send out a million emails and get 5 back asking how they can make money. If they got a million responses, they couldn’t respond to them all or even figure out who the suckers are that will eventually send them banking information! If you’re really annoyed by these guys, we should all respond to them instead of deleting them.
So what’s the lesson?
Know your audience. Design your marketing to appeal to your target. Figure out what they are looking for and how you can help.
It’s fascinating to me that making their marketing more slick would hurt the Nigerian spammer’s results. We should remember to not make our marketing how we want it, but make it how it should be to get results.
The difference is that we’re looking for customers to help…not for suckers.
