I had a client tell me that they just needed me to make their website look pretty. I told them that I can do more for their site, and they need me to do more than just make their site look pretty.
The site had no call to action. The copy was not appealing to the target audience. The navigation was confusing. The site architecture was poor. The wrong areas of the site were more prominent. It goes on…
It would be malpractice on a graphic designer’s part to make a site look pretty and not function. I gave their site an entire overhaul and turned their online presence around.
Here are a few things to keep in mind besides just looking pretty for a website:
- Easy for visitors to contact you
- Easy navigation
- Simple statement of your business on your homage (reinforced visually)
- Make it only as big as it needs to be
- Design the site for your target audience
- Decide the goal of your website and build the content for that goal
Of course I did make the site look pretty too.
